Sign Language Club

Week 1 Wrap Up!

We’re off to a great start!! You’re child came home with a Ziploc baggie filled with handouts. Please make sure that baggie comes back each meeting. We will add more handouts and song sheets.

This week we learned the Manual Alphabet (the ABCs in sign language). In the handouts your child came home with is a “hint” page. It’s a half sheet of paper that has fun hints for how each letter is shaped. We practiced finger spelling our names. We also learned how to introduce ourselves and how to ask someone else their name.

There are many fun ways to practice the manual alphabet.
While driving in the car, sign the license plates you pass.
Practice your spelling words by finger spelling them.
Put Scrabble letter tiles in a container and randomly pull out tiles. Then fingerspell the letter or letters that you pull out.

Pictures & Video

In building a portfolio, I would like to take pictures and/or video recordings during Sign Language Club meetings. There will be a Release Form coming home next week. Please send it back to school for the next meeting. I understand if parents don’t want their children photographed or video taped, that is why I’m asking for a release.

Words we learned this week…

About Mandy

About Mandy

Sign Language has always been an interest of mine.  From the time I learned about Helen Keller in elementary school, to a class I took in college, my hands have been signing.

As a teacher, I used sign language everyday in the classroom.  When my husband and I decided to start a family, number one on my list was to teach our children American Sign Language (ASL).

Our daughter is now a year and a half, she signs “more”, “Thank you”, “Jesus”, “Please”, “Daddy”, “bed”, and many others.

I’m honored to be able to say I’m a certified Signing Time instructor.  My future goals are to work towards my license in Speech/Language Pathologist.  And of course, teach families in Fort Collins Baby Sign Language.
